Diving Cancun vs Cozumel

When it comes to diving, many new divers or people that have never been to the area will ask which diving is better? Cancun diving or Cozumel Diving?

The truth is both locations are good and offer divers completely different diving experiences and opportunities.

Both locations are part of the second largest reef structure in the world. The reef is system, the Mesoamerican reef is almost 700-miles long and goes from the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula all the way down to Honduras.

Cozumel is world famous for it's diving and has been for many decades. It is the primary reason people would visit Cozumel. We run our day trips from Cancun to dive in Cozumel three days a week and it's a great option if you are staying in Cancun.

What makes Cozumel so famous, is it's wall diving. Verticle drop offs from 30ft into 100's of feet of water. The diving in Cozumel is drift diving along verticle walls of beautiful coral and amazing marine life.

Most of the best diving in Cozumel is deep diving. 80ft to 90ft drift dives. This makes Cozumel a destination that is not too well suited for beginners as you will never be diving on the best sites Cozumel has to offer.

Cancun on the other hand, while part of the same reef system, has a bottom and does not have the walls. We have reefs in the 30ft range and we have reefs in the 60ft range, along with a wreck dive for advanced divers that sits in about 85ft of water.

With easy calm reef diving available, Cancun is a great place for certified divers as well as beginners. Cancun gives beginners great opportunities to dive reefs as well as the Underwater MUSA Museum site while doing a Discover Scuba Course or completing the Open Water Course Certification Course.

Certified divers can enjoy beautiful reefs with longer bottom times than the deep dives in Cozumel as well as dive shallow sites for refresher dives or to dive with family members that are beginners or just learning to dive for the first time.

So as you can see, rather than looking at in the way of which destination is better, we believ it should be looked at more in the way of which destination fits you and your diving situation better.
